I thought it was really strange at the time and assumed it was a bug; I didn't realize it was a conversation scope feature. Technically, other softwares are not wrong here, because the ActivityPub message has Public audience, despite being displayed as Conversation in Mitra UI. So, do you think it's okay to limit visibility options to Direct in this case? That will prevent accidental scope widening.

@julian Create is a bit more complicated because creating something that is not yours doesn't make much sense. However, if we focus solely on authentication, it's fine too. If Create.object has different origin than Create, just fetch it from there.

However, consumers must not trust the embedded activity, and fetch it by its ID (or verify FEP-8b32 integrity proof, if present). (apparently PieFed outboxes are served with a wrong content type, application/json ?)

@nate@holos.dns7.top There have also been rumblings of implementing Zot/Nomad’s nomadic identities, although that effort seems to have stalled out. Finally, some platforms like Streams/Hubzilla (Nomad & Zot respectively) offer limited user account ownership, bridging internally to ActivityPub. However, if a server went down, the user would retain their Nomad/Zot following while losing their ActivityPub followers/following. It didn't stall. Client to Server Interactions it says "If an Activity is submitted with a value in the id property, servers MUST ignore this and generate a new id for the Activity." ActivityPub sometimes uses "activities" and "objects" interchangeably, it even allows POSTing objects directly without wrapping them in Create, so this "MUST" may apply to objects too. I think this means that a client can pass an id, it is just not guaranteed to be respected by a server. AFAIK there is nothing in the spec that forbids clients to provide an ID in replies and similar properties. @trwnh@mastodon.social

@mariusor@metalhead.club Could you tell me more about how replies and similar properties are treated by GoAP servers? I initially imagined that clients would put collection ID there, but regular ActivityPub clients (not FEP-ae97) are not supposed to mint identifiers. So I decided to remove this from my Collections FEP and recommend explicit creation instead (via Create activity). One possible solution is to introduce a special value (such as null), that tells server that it should create a collection: { "type": "Note", "replies": null } cc @trwnh@mastodon.social

@hongminhee@hollo.social @phnt@fluffytail.org I guess I should clarify what my comment was about. I didn't say that people should reject LLMs because using them is unethical or whatever. The real question is, whether they will be rejected or not. You both seem to be convinced that LLMs are here to stay, like this is some kind of historical inevitability. If this were true, resisting them would indeed be irrational. But there is no such thing as historical inevitability. Some technologies just come and go, and such examples exist in recent history. Remember NFTs? That technology was relatively benign compared to LLMs, and yet it was effectively un-invented.

@fediversereport@mastodon.social The Mastodon API is open source, but it is not an open standard. It is designed, maintained, and changed by one project, without input from the rest of the ecosystem. Not without. The design of this API is shaped by the needs Mastodon users. Sometimes PRs are submitted by developers of 3rd party clients and by developers of other servers. Independent implementers of Mastodon API often extend it, and copy each other's extensions, there is even a discussion about Mastodon API Enhancement Proposals (similar to FEPs). So I think that by now it is very much an open standard. ActivityPub API may have W3C's stamp or approval, but that doesn't mean anything if nobody uses it. P.S. Does you blog not federate anymore?

FEP website now displays the number of implementations for each implementable proposal: https://fediverse.codeberg.page/fep/final/ These numbers are based on the information that authors provide in the "Implementations" section of a proposal. By default, proposals are informational, so authors need to opt in by adding type: implementation to the metadata block. #fep #fedidev

Small projects could treat all contributions the same, but popular projects will be overwhelmed by slop. Making LLMs socially unacceptable is a rational solution, and might even be the only real solution because it works at scale.

minimitra now uses #PGlite instead of postgres: https://pglite.dev It's a portable database, so the installation process will not require any sysadmin skills. You just need to install the rust compiler and npm (the latter is required for pglite, I plan to remove this dependency in the future). I had to reset my database because pg_restore didn't work with pglite, but identity and actor ID have been preserved: @minimitra.
