I photographed ‘Dinosaur’ the pigeon back in August of last year. It’s typical for this spot to have a rotating art installation, and this is the first time I can recall community pushback over removal to make way for a new art piece. I suppose if anything was left permanently, the pigeon is quintessential New York City vibes. Anytime I am in the area I see a crowd of tourists waiting to take a photo with it. 🐦🎨👨🏻‍💻

Mr. Mastodon’s argument treats translation as a substitution problem (which machine translation used to be), but LLMs treat it as a comprehension and reconstruction problem. They have a context window and that is entirely new.

Comparing old, statistical machine translation here just doesn’t make sense because LLMs are capable of capturing nuance and know what a natural sentence sounds like. It’s 2026, not 2016, and the gap of degree has never been smaller. 👨🏻‍💻

Claude for desktop is an Electron app because, “native has nothing to offer”…and, “OS vendors use everything in their power to make you not want to develop native apps for their platform.”

When a macOS app is built with Electron I can tell immediately, and they are terrible in comparison. This piece is entirely off-base. ⚛️👨🏻‍💻

You’d think being given a limited scope of knowledge like a programming language would be ideal for a language model to excel at. The human element ends up proving how essential it is because writing efficient code and algorithms requires deep intuition about logic. Maybe it will eventually get there, but at 20x the footprint compared to writing the code yourself. For now I use Claude where it does excel, writing my unit testing. 🛠️👨🏻‍💻

Finally beginning to see more NaviLens placards placed around subway stations in the city, just saw new ones at Columbus Circle station today. Obviously blind and partly sighted people will benefit the most, but they can also be used for providing alternative language guidance too. 💜🚇

It’s wild how dismissive so many people are about the cost of gasoline because “I don’t drive so it doesn’t impact me.” As if you don’t consume goods which are transported using fuel? Lol.

For every $2 per barrel price increase it results in 1¢ per gallon at the gas pump, and every 50¢ increase at the gas pump results in ~0.6% increase in inflation which affects everybody. It sounds like an insignificant amount, but those <1% changes to inflation are wildly impactful. 🛢️👨🏻‍💻
